The Mill
As part of the Cultural Computing focus area in the Center for Computation & Technology, DMC 1065 houses the Media Interaction Laboratory & Library (MILL), a lab space for creating electronics hardware based on cutting edge embedded technology and sensing devices. Specialties include making Embedded Acoustic Instruments and custom Haptic Devices.
Next door is the Cultural Computing Fab Lab which houses a Laser Cutter, 3D printer, and other tools for digital fabrication. The result is a space for research, development, and exploration in how we interface with computers, sound, and the world around us.
The MILL also acts as a library for interaction techniques. Items can be checked out for use in student projects and code repositories allow sharing of techniques. Along with housing interface objects developed in-house, items such as Google glass, mobile devices, keyboards, 3D joysticks, leap motion, Kinect, Oculus Rift, and various controllers are continually added to the Library to help further research and exploration.
