The Experimental Music & Digital Media program has a wide breadth of facilities and resources accessible to our students. Beyond the ones listed below, we commonly work with Digital Art, Mass Communication, Engineering, Computer Science and many other departments through the Center for Computation & Technology. This allows us to explore music and sound in all sorts of contexts from augmented reality to data sonifications, from mobile devices to robotic installations.

DMC 1023/25 – DMC Studio
The pair of Control Room (1023) and 400sqft Soundhouse (1025) serves as an audio workhorse for traditional recording, sound experiments, VR/AR research and some post production.

An 8.1 channel studio for composition and post production of everything from acousmatic music, ambisonic sound, podcasts, film & video, video game and immersive VR/AR audio.

A 20ft virtual production wall used for film & TV, Interactive/Immersive displays, and extended reality.

SOM 304 – Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana
Rehearsal space for the 10 station Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana & Louisiana Mobile App Orchestra. Performance forces employed may include projection, networked systems, robotics, and whatever acoustic, electronic, or computational instruments are required for various pieces. DMC 2074 – The MILL: Media Interaction Laboratory & Library
Electronics lab for prototyping circuits, HCI systems, and other experimental physical computing devices. Soldering irons, oscilloscope, parts, and tools for creating Digital Musical Instruments.
In addition to the Lab, we collect many HCI devices, specialized speakers, tactile transducers, and other technology as a Library of devices that can be checked out for projects. Some student projects, once documented, become part of the Library for checkout in future media artworks.

Digital Media Center Theatre
71 channel Meyer surround sound system, HD & 4k Projection, variable acoustics. Works are composed specifically for this space and students are trained in the usage of Cuestation, Soundmaps, for the production of concerts utilizing these tools.
The ICAST system is a “portable” surround diffusion system that is used to perform these kinds of works at various sites on and off campus. It also serves as a research tool for developing software to manage this kind of sound installation and performance.
