The Experimental Music & Digital Media (EMDM) program addresses the emerging understanding that technology, computation and digital resources are profoundly changing the way in which we compose, perform, study and teach music. EMDM builds off this premise and engages students and faculty in cutting-edge research that borders between computer science, engineering, art, design and music. EMDM is closely aligned with the Arts, Visualization, Advanced Technologies and Research (AVATAR) Initiative of the Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) at LSU.

The EMDM program maintains active research, composition, and performance activities as exhibited in the Redstick FutureFest, the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana/ Louisiana Mobile App Orchestra (LOLs/LMAOs), the Cinema for the Ears concert series, various High Voltage Electroacoustic Music concerts throughout the year, and the Electric LaTex Festival. The program has also been host to some of the foremost conferences and festivals in computer music and new media including hosting the Symposium on Laptop Ensembles & Orchestras (SLEO 2012), the Society of ElectroAcoustic Music in the United States National Conference (SEAMUS 2001& 1990), the International Conference on New Interfaces for Music Expression (NIME2015), and the National Student Electronic Music Event (NSEME2017)

The Experimental Music & Digital Media program is a PhD research program. Ph.D. in Experimental Music and Digital Media (EM/DM)

We also open our courses campus wide through the Digital Media Arts & Engineering Minor and have an undergraduate focus through the Bachelor of Arts in Experimental Music & Digital Media.  (click for more info on all undergraduate options.)
